About

When I first became interested in photography, I was drawn to the images of Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Frank, Eugene Smith and Andre Kertesz. There is a simplicity, honesty and power in the black and white image that represents the essential foundation of photography as an art. In 1972, my life changed when I bought my first Leica camera. As I learned to use the rangefinder camera, my efforts in photography became more directed to the field of documentation. These works include:

Waiting For Pele-The Cosmos Years- 1975-1977

In 1975, The New York Cosmos stunned the international soccer world when they signed the legendary Brazilian superstar, Pele, to a three- year contract. This story chronicles the birth of the popularity of soccer in the USA.

The Memorial Day Parade- New York City

The Memorial Day Parade was once one of New York’s grand events. Over the years, its fortunes dwindled to a whisper of what it once was. In 2000, six people waited in stunned silence, as not one member of the military, veteran’s group or city government, participated in the parade, thus ending a consecutive streak dating back to 1867. This story chronicles the decline of the parade from 1974 to 2000.

Northeastern Brazil-A Portfolio

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Northeastern Brazil during the 1960’s. I have returned to the Northeast to photograph at different times in my life. This portfolio is a small representation of the people and places that I have encountered in this wonderful land.

I have had a long career as a photojournalist. My photographs have appeared in books by Crown, Bantam, Longman, and were included in the 1970’s classic publication, “The Family Of Children”. My work has also appeared in various magazines including Sports Illustrated, New York Times Magazine, Runner’s World, Harvard Alumni Magazine, Scholastic, Horizon Magazine, US magazine, Parade magazine and many others. I have also done brochures for The Bank Street School and Harlem Hospital. A selection of photographs from “Waiting For Pele”, have been included in the re-release of “My Life And The Beautiful Game” by Pele and Robert L Fish, Skyhorse Publishing, New York City.

My photographs have been exhibited in individual and group shows in various galleries in New York City. I also taught photography at The City University of New York, The international Ladies Garment Worker’s Union and The Lexington School For the Deaf.

I have been fortunate, my camera has taken me to many parts of the world and allowed me to photograph some amazing people and places. I hope you enjoy seeing just a fraction of these images.
